Tidal Waves Displace Over 500 Residents in Ketu South

According to Mr. Pascal Agbagba, Volta Regional Director of Operations at NADMO, Devastating tidal waves have displaced 519 residents from 101 households in three communities within the Ketu South Municipality.

The hardest-hit area, Agavedzi, saw 21 households completely destroyed, affecting 129 people. Salakope and Amutinu also suffered severe damage, displacing 172 and 318 residents, respectively.At an emergency meeting held at the Ketu South Municipal Assembly, Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, Regional Security Council members, NADMO representatives, and community leaders assessed the crisis and coordinated relief efforts.

Hon. Gunu described the situation as a national security concern, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention. He highlighted the psychological trauma faced by victims, especially women and children, and reassured the communities that the government is actively working on urgent coastal protection measures.To offer immediate support, Mr. Daniel Kwaku Denteh, the outgoing Deputy Director-General of NADMO, announced the distribution of essential relief items to affected families.

The aid package includes 250 bags of rice (25kg each), 50 cartons of cooking oil, 100 cartons of soap, 1,000 mosquito nets, 30 cartons of mosquito coils, 500 blankets, 20 cartons of used clothing, 1,000 plastic cups, 500 plastic plates, 500 plastic buckets, and 200 plastic basins.

A delegation of Health Professionals is set to visit the affected areas to oversee health screenings and also advice the communities on health related issues. A clinical psychologist will also be deployed to assist traumatized residents.

With March expected to bring even harsher tidal conditions, local leaders are urging the government to expedite ongoing resettlement projects and explore dredging as a long-term solution.
